Year 5 Geography – Pompeii – How can a whole city just disappear?

In our Extreme Earth Geography topic, we used Google Earth to find the ruins of Pompeii. We investigated how a whole city could disappear for a thousand years, and how a farmer digging a hole could discover a lost civilisation.

We loved using 3D mapping to look at what the ruins look like today. We were amazed to realise this was all buried for centuries. Using research we were then able to explain what life was like before the eruption.

Also, it’s clear from our satellite photos that Mt Vesuvius could erupt again at any time – it’s only dormant, which is the scientific word for asleep!
